[00:01:15] Okay, welcome to my shorty episodes. Every week you’re going to be hearing from me in a more candid format. Well, I mean, actually I think I’m pretty candid anyway, but I’m going to share with you little bite-sized nuggets that you guys can listen to, take away, and hopefully will inspire and motivate you in your day.
[00:01:34] So welcome. To number one. Today, I really wanted to dive into this topic of the messy middle. I think that we are in a time right now where the economy is still feeling like it’s uncertain. The world feels uncertain. There are companies closing. You know, at the time of recording this, another furniture business, um, has closed its doors.
[00:01:56] And so it feels scary. It feels [00:02:00] like It’s time to be scrappy. What are we doing? People are nervous. And so I think it’s important to remind ourselves that we are in that messy middle and that it is okay. It is okay to be in that messy middle. You are the one who is trying. So I want you to come back to this episode.
[00:02:18] Anytime you feel like you need a hit of motivation or you need a reminder that running a small business. Is going to be messy. And guess what? That actually means that you’re in the trenches. You are the man in the arena, the man in the arena. It is pulled from a speech that Theodore Roosevelt gave forever ago.
[00:02:41] And I’m going to read it to you here because I want this to be your go-to episode to come back to remind you that you are in the freaking arena right now. You are the man in the arena. So here it goes.
It’s not the critic who counts. Not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena. That’s you, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs, who comes short again and again because there is no effort without error and shortcoming, but who does actually strive to do the deeds, who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the bet. Who at the best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat. – Theodore Roosevelt.

[00:03:55] Heck, maybe you’re even failing right now as you listen to this. [00:04:00] Maybe you can’t make payroll. Maybe you thought you could afford someone. Maybe you have to let someone go. Maybe you’ve made the wrong hire. Maybe you’re dealing with clients who are just shitting on you. Maybe you Got the prices wrong.
[00:04:14] Maybe you’re over budget. Maybe your clients haven’t paid you. Maybe you’re chasing your clients for money. Maybe you haven’t charged enough money. Maybe you keep dealing with defective products. Maybe you placed orders with a company that went out of business and now you’re like, What the heck do I do?
[00:04:29] There’s a million maybes, and there’s a million things that can go wrong while you are striving and achieving for your goals. And I’m saying this to you because I’m using it as a reminder to myself. Because sometimes I need this reminder too. Heck, more than sometimes. We need the reminder that we are in it doing the work and that counts for everything.
[00:04:52] Who cares what your family’s saying? Who cares what your friends are saying? Who cares what everybody else on the internet says about [00:05:00] what you should be doing? What is a failure? What means you’re successful? Ignore the shiny squares. You know the ones I’m talking about on Instagram.
You are in the middle, you are doing the work.
[00:05:16] Don’t give up. This episode is just here to remind you, that you are doing everything right. Keep putting one foot in front of the next. Don’t worry about the how. The universe is helping you get there. Just keep doing, keep being smart, keep investing in yourself, keep investing in your business, keep. Doing the things despite the setbacks, you are the man in the arena.
You are the woman in the arena. You are the person who is calling your own shots and it’s not going to always go well, but that’s okay because eventually you’re going to look back and you’re gonna be so freaking proud of the mud that you’ve walked through and the dirt that you’ve gone through. You are going to be so proud of yourself.
