My Social Media Marketing Experience
You wouldn’t be reading this if it was for social media.
That’s how most of you found me right?
So does it also work to find clients? Well, the answer is two fold and will vary depending on who you ask. I’m going to share what I’ve learned from social media marketing and you can do with that what you will!
These are the non negotiables for social media
1. Consistency
Post regularly and at the same time every day. Yes you must post every day / at least once a day if not more
2. Brand identity
Colour palette, filters and messaging needs to be cohesive
3. Authenticity
Share who you are. You don’t need to put your face in front of the cameras the way that I do but you should let your style and personality show if you want to attract clients who like you! Don’t forget that a client/designer relationship often lasts the better part of the year so hopefully you like each other.
4. Focus on 1 or 2 platforms only
Pick one or two platforms and focus on them with all your might. I love instagram and so that’s where I focus all my efforts.
5. Ask for business
Too many people make the mistake of showing how wonderfully busy they are on social. Like they should win a prize… but your potential client might think you’re too busy to take on their project. Ask for business! Put a CALL TO ACTION in your bio or in your stories.
6. Engagement
Engage with your audience, respond to EVERY comment and return the favour by commenting on other peoples photos.
So does social media marketing work? Well, in my experience Instagram works in two ways. The first way is that it’s basically your second website – except nowadays I’d say people will check your IG out even before they land on your website. And second, it’s an opportunity for you to share your whole self and connect with people. Ask questions and answer them. Show your clients that you are an expert in your field by showing them how you do things.
Nothing can substitute for human connection and interaction so be careful not to put all your marketing eggs in one basket. Attend events and network every chance you get. Use your email list too (if you don’t have one of these, now’s the time to start one).
But does it work to find clients? Sometimes. In my experience the instagram page is where people go to validate their hiring choice. So in a way yes it sells your services. Referrals are still my top source of clients so remember to nurture the clients you already have to ensure they are your raving fans… and then share their praise on social 😉
