Is Full-Service Interior Design Right for You? 5 Questions to Ask Yourself

When is an ideal client a lemon?

When you don’t have the process to serve them.

For years, I thought landing bigger, better interior design projects would solve everything. If I could just get the right client through the door, surely the rest would fall into place.

But I learned the hard way that the client doesn’t come first.

The process does.

In this episode, I’m talking about two very different designers. I’ve been both of them, and there’s a good chance you’ll recognize yourself in one of them too.

One is saying yes to everything: consultations, decorating, small projects, staging, whatever comes through the door, quietly hoping that eventually one of those projects will turn into something bigger.

The other knows she wants full-service interior design. She sees the beautiful installs and turnkey projects and knows that’s the level of service she wants to offer, but she isn’t quite sure how to get there.

If you’ve been curious about full service but also intimidated by everything that comes with it, I get it.

Full service isn’t simply more design. You’re taking responsibility for the entire client journey, including procurement, trades, deliveries, timelines, money, logistics, problems, and people.

And it isn’t necessarily the right business model for every designer.

That’s why I’m walking you through five questions to ask yourself before deciding whether full-service interior design is actually the business you want to build.

I also share more of my own journey from taking on lots of smaller-budget projects to eventually running full-service projects with significant furnishing budgets.

It wasn’t better marketing that made the biggest difference.

It wasn’t even a better portfolio.

It was finally creating a process I could explain, sell, and consistently deliver.

Because if you can’t articulate the journey, it’s very difficult for a client to trust you to take them on it.

And if you decide full service is the business you want, you don’t need to wait around hoping someone eventually chooses you for a bigger project.

You can intentionally build the business that’s ready for it.
